Synopsis - It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall. Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests. Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible.
If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

The beginning is difficult to read simply because of how emotional and thought provoking it is, or at least it was for me. Kate is scared to death of her mother dying but is more than aware that it's imminent. Her mother has had cancer for years and Kate's childhood has been anything but ordinary. As Kate grants her mothers last wish she encounters more than she ever bargained for. She would do anything to keep her mom alive, to keep her mom with her but she never thought that was possible up until she gets to meets Henry.

Henry claims to be Hades, God of The Underworld. Henry's mysterious, alluring and dark. Kate's drawn to him instantly, but she also thinks he's lost his mind. Ava, a classmate of Kate's did a terrible thing, played and terrible prank on Kate and payed with her life. Henry brought Ava back from the dead with the promise of Kate joining him in his manor for six months. Kate was desperate and didn't want another death haunting her, so she agreed. When Kate doesn't hold up her end of the bargain, Henry comes looking for her, to collect, and Ava is found dead the next morning. Promises are promises, right? Another promise is made once Kate enters the manor. Henry promises that if Kate participates and undergoes seven tests, he'll keep her mother alive until Kate's ready to let go. So, Kate becomes roped into "The Goddess Tests" and visiting with her mom in her dreams. Kate's able to speak with her mom and spend time with her at night, in her dreams, as if things were normal. It becomes evident how many secrets the manor holds and that someone is trying to kill Kate. None of the other girls, none of the other participants ever made it past Christmas, but Kate is different. Kate has more wit, more drive, more stamina and far more on the line. Although, that still doesn't keep Kate from being in danger.

Life at the manor is complicated, don't you think? Kate can have absolutely anything she wants, except freedom. Kate is followed around constantly, she's told what to wear, what to eat, where to go and when to be there. She feels suffocated, exhausted and frustrated. Henry would never ease up on security, but he did allow Kate to start dressing how she wanted. So, with little changes then comes Kate's understanding. Kate understands Henry and his propencity to brood. Without ruining the book, it's easy to say that no one is who they appear to be and nothing is as it seems. Henry keeps his feelings behind lock and key, but Kate breaks through and is able to get to him like no one else has, not even Persephone.

I love books that keeps me interested in every single character, and not just the main one. There are so many characters in this book and they are so very well developed. The ending blew my mind, and something I also love is when a book's ending exceeds my expectations. In my opinion, the ending of the book was the best part because of how everything went down. The finality of it all was absolutely amazing and I was floored. The ending made me crave the next installment, "Goddess Interrupted." I'm looking so forward to it. The Greek Mythology is addictive and absolutely vital to the story.
I loved it and can't believe I have to wait until 2012!
